It’s uncontroversial to say Monty Python and the Holy Grail is not crap. We know that. It’s a brilliant comedy. I finally got to watch the DVD version with commentaries and little extras.
Also not crap.
There’s a bit of overlap with the commentaries in terms of subject matter. I’d cite an example, but it’s been a week since I’ve seen it, I have no notes, and I’m not renting it again. That’s the kind of crack journalism you’ll find on Crap or Not Crap, my friends.
I liked John Cleese’s commentary the best. He gave the most insight about humor writing and performing. (In all the interviews I’ve watched of the Pythons, he is the more introspective of the bunch in regards to humor as a craft. Or humour, for those of you who can’t read American-glish. Ooh, see what I did there? That’s called a shitty joke. A cheap, poor quality, underwhelming, and overall bad joke. In keeping with the name of this site, I rank that joke as ‘crap.’)
One of the subtitle options is William Shakespeare’s Henry IV “for those who don’t like the film.” It’s the text of Henry IV subtitling the film. It’s funny for 10 minutes, but I don’t expect you to watch the whole film like that. (It does kinda sync up strangely in parts.)
I watched Holy Grail with regular subtitles too. I was surprised how many jokes I’d missed in all the previous times I’d watched it from my old, scratchy VHS tape. Then again, I speak American-glish, so what do I know. In sum, movie? Not crap. DVD extras? Not crap. Me? Crap.
